Speaking Persuasively:
Making an Argument via Short Films


Speaking Persuasively is a 12-hour course focusing on the production of a persuasive short talk. During the course you will watch four short films (ranging from 15 to 30 minutes) of different genres, from drama to animation, one for each 3-hour session. These will be used as a basis for discussion and the creation of a short talk. Sessions will focus on specific skills involved in creating a persuasive review including: 1) structuring views, 2) summarizing key points, and 3) expressing persuasion.

 

Speaking Persuasively will provide you with the opportunity to construct an oral argument. This will be done through the construction of an oral film review. 

 

After completing the course, you are expected to:

 

  1. Identify how a persuasive talk, especially in the form of an oral review, is structured;
  2. Master effective summarization skills;
  3. Express clear opinions in a discussion context and individually as part of a talk;
  4. Understand language used for critiquing;
  5. Interact effectively in discussions;
  6. Discover techniques for learning new vocabulary;
  7. Develop an appreciation for film.
